Unlocking the full potential of this charming period cottage in Kingsley was no small task for our client. When we first arrived and heard about the ambitious plans to lower the floor, open up the space, and create a vaulted ceiling, we were brimming with excitement to start the design process.

This traditional setting had all the country kitchen vibes and the choice of an in-frame shaker, painted in Farrow & Ball’s “Treron” & “School House White” was perfect, working well with newly installed oak beams, giving the kitchen an inviting and timeless look.

Maximising space in properties that were not designed for modern living often requires some out-of-the-box thinking (quite literally!). We had to think beyond the typical cabinet dimensions to create flow in this space.

We knew the long but slightly narrow space would really benefit from an island. To allow for this, we designed shallower larder cabinets on the far side, to maintain a comfortable amount of space around the island for moving around but offering plenty of storage.

The client opted for a Quooker tap in classic patinated brass, offering modern boiling water functionality with a traditional twist.

Another quirk of this cottage was the low window that was positioned next to the exposed utility meters.

Our only solution to an unsightly feature is to find a way to make it beautiful! We designed a window seat to create additional seating with storage and also built cabinetry around the meters to disguise them in a way that felt original & integral to the kitchen

Beyond the main kitchen area, we designed a separate space to house the washing machine, fridge, and freezer. Our focus was on optimising storage and creating a social hub within the main kitchen area, a choice that truly paid off.

The result? An open, practical, and stunning kitchen that tastefully brought this charming cottage into the modern era.
